When a client arrives with a condition you are unfamiliar with, a comprehensive intake is necessary to determine whether or not massage is appropriate. In the case of Stephanie's client with ALS, it would be prudent to do a google search to become familiar with the diagnosis. She should also ask the client probing questions. If necessary, obtain a doctor's note. Assuming it would be alright to proceed with a treatment, modifications would need to be made. She and the client would have to decide if the treatment would take place in the wheelchair or if proper modifications could be made using the table, taking into account safe transfer from chair to table and back. Likely adjustments might include slowing down the pace of movement, lightening up on pressure, and possibly shortening the session.
